Coworkers harmful to productivity

I've been trying to get stuff done this week and admittedly I can do a good job distracting myself, but eventually I do get around to getting work done. But this week has been completely tanked by coworkers wanting to chatting, wanting me to help them with their problems, wanting me to listen to what they're doing, or wanting me to tell them what to do.

So I've decided that coworkers are bad for my productivity.

Sounds like it's time for an employee therapy program...or something. I dunno. I can understand employees being somewhat social -- you spend so much time together that it makes sense to see if you have something, anything in common. But the main reason you're there is to work, not to bond. It's a fine line to walk.

I think my environment is extra tough for that fine line. Since really I'm working in a lab at caltech, about half of my "co-workers" are really grad students.

Students who may not have ever had a real job yet.
