Car free day

Today on enn.com there was this article on Bogota, Colombia, enjoying a day without cars.

"Millions of residents of the capital hiked, biked, and skated to work Thursday or took buses and taxis during a "day without cars" that left the normally congested avenues of Bogota eerily devoid of traffic jams."

"Rush-hour restrictions have dramatically cut traffic, and new restaurants and upscale shopping districts have cropped up."

I'm going to propose that when people don't need to feed a large percentage of their resources to the automobile, that leaves them more resources for other things.
