Old time fairy tales, as in the Brothers Grimm, have fairy tales that teach children that the real world is a brutal place. Modern fairy tales protect the children and make believe the world is a happy and cheerful. Which is better?

Should fairy tales...

reveal the brutal nature of the real world?
be happy and cheerful?

I voted for brutal nature, but my understanding was that the stories by the Brothers Grimm were never intended to be for children. I thought they were meant to record traditional stories of folklore.
