Old time fairy tales, as in the Brothers Grimm, have fairy tales that teach children that the real world is a brutal place. Modern fairy tales protect the children and make believe the world is a happy and cheerful. Which is better?

Should fairy tales...

reveal the brutal nature of the real world?
be happy and cheerful?

I read lots of traditional fairy tales when I was growing up and they didn't steal my childhood away from me.

They taught me that sometimes you can beat the monsters.

Sure, but the question wasn't really about what the impact of said stories might be, it was more about saying "hey kid, life sucks!" early on or letting them at least bask in innocence for a while. At least to me. YMMV. :)
