Thanks to google earth, the kml export of CONUS MODIS and the LA Times, I figured out that we're about 2.5 miles away from the Sierra Madre fire. We're only about 2 miles from the closest point in the evacuation zone.

I flew out of LAX yesterday and we went right over the fire...couldn't see any active burn fronts, just a lot of smoke.
