LJ backup tool

Slashdot is running a story about LJ being "responsible for their links" in some way that involves their badly handled porn crackdown, which reminded me, maybe I should back up my LJ in case something goes "wrong".

a lj download/migration tool and yes it grabs comments (and user icons too) and I even gave it a cursory code review. The version I grabbed at 2007 Aug 29 23:16 didn't seem to do anything bad with the password. (Though I'm not sure what it'll do if I run it again...)

And even if nothing goes wrong, at least I can now grep my LJ.

(You will need python to use it.)

Two other possibilities:

LJ Export tool
LJ Book (turn your journal into a PDF--I've tried this and it works)

Though at least in the case of the LJ export tool it doesn't seem to export comments. And PDFs aren't the most searchable things in the world.

I used one and changed my password to something dumb first, and then changed it back as soon as it was done. It can't prevent everything bad from happening, but it can at least mitigate.
