Algorithmic Music

After looking at all the crap the RIAA is doing to try and kill digital music (and maintain their financial power) I want a free alternative.

I'd like some software that can automatically generate background/elevator music.

It'd be really cool if the software somehow used the genetic algorithm to create variation in the music, and if one connected that to some kind of social site where people could share the "DNA" of their best generated music, it might eventually actually generate some kind of cool stuff.

I might imagine seeding it with music from a variety of styles from before 1800 (to provide for some buffer to copyright extensions).

Though maybe it'd just be cheaper to just listen to internet radio stations from outside of the US.
