The edge is sharp, and filled with my blood

I discovered that there's now a push for "mobile on the desktop" and there are theoretically some motherboards that are using laptop style chipsets, and can take laptop CPUs. My first attempt with this was with the MSI 945GT Speedster-A4R, but when I dropped the T7200 Core 2 Duo chip in it, the system kept rebooting as soon as it hit post.

So I ordered myself an ASUS N4L VM, which did officially say that it supported this chip. So once everything arrived I plugged it all together and it "seemed" to boot, though the BIOS strangely didn't respond to the USB keyboard, so I couldn't enter the BIOS setup or select which OS I wanted off of GRUB.

Ah I thought, they left the USB keyboard support off in the BIOS I'll just plug in a PS/2 keyboard and everything should work. But when I did that, I got a CPU error and the system refused to boot, and that's wen I connected the CPU is supported after BIOS revision F2.

This led to the fun of dragging a disk with windows out of one computer and into the other (as I don't own any working floppy disk drives any longer, and then reflashing the BIOS using windows.

Once I'd done that everything booted fine, so I moved on to trying to setup Myth TV under Xen. Except once I got the drivers for the PVR card installed the system kept rebooting, it turns out there's a couple pieces of hardware that doesn't work under Xen... like the ivtv drivers. (And I'm not so sure about sound).

So if I want some security I'm going to have to go back to trying to understand SELinux.

D'oh! I forgot to put it into my calendar, and so it completely slipped the sieve that is my mind.
