Plastic is not fastastic

My girlfriend is sick and wanted a digital thermometer (as they're reusable and easier to use than the disposable ones found in our first aid kits).

When I got my new purchase home I looked at its smooth blister pack and said. "This is a job for a saw!"

But alas, even using a hacksaw it was still miserably hard to open the stupid plastic box. I might consider power tools the next time, but I think I'd need to figure out how to best to put the item in a vice.

Not too long ago, I saw a tool designed specifically for getting those stupid rigid plastic packages open.

Guess what it was packaged in.

I have found that the small retractable magnetic box cutter from the Container Store is about the best tool there is for slicing those packages open. It's extremely sharp, but the blade is small and so is the tool itself, so you can maneuver it easily as you slice through the plastic.
