Eek! My therapist is off on vacation for two whole weeks. So, I was thinking of reading 1984, as I thought they had some unending war against some undefined enemy to help keep the population under control, but it's probably far too depressing for me to try when I don't have a safety net at hand.

The thing that reminded me of this were a couple of articles on alternet.org about censorship during the most recent US conflicts. And this new "war" on terrorism purports to be virtually invisible. Also since the remaining media companies are petitioning the FCC to allow them to own even more media outlets the government has great leverage to get them to report only happy positive news about the wonderful successes of our new war and we didn't accidentally bomb any civilians. Really, you can trust us, we're the government.

I hope the EU continues to make progress at assuming the progressive leadership role that the US seems incapable of. I read that the EU actually managed to make progress getting countries like japan and canada to support the kyoto protocol, even with Bush trying to ax it. A condition for joining the EU is to ban the death penalty, the US is still executing people. Several EU member states have allowed for same-gender couples nearly the same to exactly the same rights as heterosexual couples.

Though I did look through Amnesty International's list of human rights abuses it appears that several of the EU member states still have problems with racism. (Though I'm not sure if it's much different than the US.)
