I saw in Brutality: Main Crop of Fractory Farms on earthsave.org/lifestyle/ a brief comment that Kosher ritual slaughter was inhumane.

I eventually tracked down row over religious animal slaughter on BBC news.

I am not sure why stunning is wrong on religious grounds. The rule seems to be that the animal must be killed in certain ways. I am not really up to date on my halal guidelines.

I am muslim, so this topic is interesting.

I only saw the reasoning for kosher, which was that the animals must be "moving" when being slaughtered.

Although the description of what the requirement for slaughter were for kosher sounded like a prohibition against downer animals, apparently the rabbis in charge of the slaughtering have decided that it means the animal must still be struggling when its throat is slit.

I saw no similar discussion of the requirements for halal meat.
