Whatever funky thing is wrong with my cable modem, I was able to work around it by setting the mtu (maximum transmission unit) to any value up to 1496.

Maybe I should tell them so they can fix it.

Erm that means your connection is either using L2TP or something like PPPoATM. Can't remember which, same as ADSL.

I think it's L2TP such that the packets are being encapsulated and the header for the L2TP takes by the rest of the bytes or something like that. Googling should provide answers.
