20 hours for life

I was reading The 'Thing' Economy and the 'Care' Economy and thinking about overwork.

A comment the author made about how at one point the way society made sure that stuff was produced and people were taken care of was to send all the men off to paid labor and keep all the women doing all the unpaid labor.

Now we have a system where everyone is doing paid labor and the unpaid labor isn't getting done.

Perhaps a different path our society could've taken is to have everyone working for 20 hours a week in paid work and 20 hours a week for unpaid work. (For instance in this system both parents of a nuclear family could actually be involved with taking care of their children.)
