I spent some fraction of the weekend staring at a LotR costume site. Although it was questionable how helpful that was for my mental health, I did find and answer to something that was puzzling me.

In the fellowship of the ring, Arwen rides a horse sitting in the typical riding position and not sidesaddle, yet she was wearing a skirt. But I thought you couldn't do that. (And yes I did actually wonder about it when I was watching FotR.

The discussion on Arwen's Chase Dress had the answer. The overskirt was constructed from 4 seperate panels that draped as a skirt but could swing apart.

Neat, femme without being restricting.

I'd like to make such a dress. I don't know much about bodices, but I could do a skirt like you've described.

Maybe it's just a fascination with elves, but I'd really like some of Arwen's clothes.
