After much struggling I finally got ALSA to dump data on the optical out of my new sound card.

The first attempt that did anything useful was aplay -D spdif wavefile. Then I built a new kernel with the OSS compatibility stuff enabled and that seemed to work. Though perhaps fiddling with envy24control might've had something to do with it. (at with least switching to optical out).

Now I just need to see if I can get X10 working again. It was convienent to be able to turn my A/C on from work.

You ought to write up a mini-howto on it! I'd be interested to know the details. What kind of audio card btw?
