So I went to dinner with some friends tonight and needed to leave from the restaurant to finish some errands. So I decided to bike from the place we were meeting at. We both left the drive way at nearly the same time. (They pulled out first and then I followed.)

I then thought, wouldn't it be neat if I got to the restaurant first? I peddled a little faster than usual. I thought all was lost when I turned on the wrong street and had to back track a short distance.

But as I was trying to figure out how to thread my U-lock through a chain link fence, the car containing my friends arrived. According to Yahoo the driving distances was 0.9 miles.

And I beat them, on my bicycle, by at least half a minute.

There is a journey I usually make to a yoga class on Thursday mornings, by bike and train. I normally carry some equipment and have to leave the house 90 minutes before the class starts. This week I rode my road bike the whole way (about 20 km) and it only took me 65 minutes (wasn't carrying any equipment tho').

Wow!

And I thought trains were supposed to speed bicycles up... Does that particular train have lots of stops?

This was an unusual case. I think it worked out this way because the train station is slightly in the wrong direction, so you go out of your way to get to the train station. Also, you have to leave plenty of time to get through the traffic in town, purchase train tickets, and get your bike onto the platform - all things you avoid by cycling the whole way.

However, there have been many experiments showing that cycling is always the quickest way to travel round London.

You go girl!

I was hoping that on some odd chance you'd show up at the slashdot meetup. I'm glad you didn't. I don't think the rampant adolescent testosterone concentration would have been quite your "scene".

There was a slashdot meeting in LA? How do you find out about such things?

I've gone to a couple linux user group meetings which don't sound all that different from the slashdot group.
