So after reading this slashdot article and wondering how I could be an independent cyclist. I realized that one could use some of those 3D rapid prototyping machines to build a wax model of a 3D object developed in some CAD software.

This wax model could the be used to make a mold.

You could then put the mold in your microwave and make metal parts.

So it's a slow, multi-step process. It's still pretty close to being a replicator in your home (or at least a factory).

Now I was thinking of it to build bicycle parts, but it could also be used to make guns or bombs.

But in the near future pretty much any motivated person should be able to make whatever small objects they'd like.

Thankfully, there aren't that many motivated people.
