On one mailing list I'm on some email showed up written in russian. I know this 'cause shockingly gnus my emacs mail client displayed the font correctly. (And the .ru address certainly helped.)

I get tons of spam from Korea. God knows why, but at least it's easy to filter out, being written in Hangul.

Was it fair to assume the mailing list had an English language only policy? It might just be that the poster wanted to post in their native language.

I always think it's a bit unfair that most English speakers around the world always assume everyone else should learn and speak English. All English language countries just don't seem to make much effort to engage people in their own language.

Then again I'm probably just being the sympathetic uber liberal again. ;)

Well, I suspected it might be spam as it's a relatively small list targeting scientists who already are kind of forced into english. It also came from a site which I've gotten english spam before from.

The clincher though was when I showed the message to the grad student in my lab whose from the ukraine and asked him.

His first response was "Thats a bunch of bullshit", then it mentioned make money fast, while using lots of slang. So given the confirmation I feel safe in calling it spam.

I actually refereed to it as "probably spam" before getting it checked.
