An odd thought

I was contemplating shoes recently and connected the thought that wearing birkenstocks (or no shoes at all) tends to produce wider feet. Which actually means that wearing shoes tends to keep feet from spreading out.

I then further realized that wearing shoes are a rather recent phenomenon.

Then looking at the microscopic and rather tightly fitting shoes that some women cram themselves into.

Does this mean that american's are voluntarily practicing foot binding?

Just an odd observation...

I know my feet feel a heck of a lot more comfortable when they have been wearing birkenstocks all day and not heels or anything like that. But I really don't have any cruel shoes (see Steve Martin's monologue on cruel shoes if you really want to feel squeamish about footwear)

Well, it's not just feet, is it? People think that they _have_ to fit into small clothes sizes, and so we end up with a society full of eating disorders, and so on... people will hurt themselves a lot if they think it'll mean they'll be "accepted".
