According to the American Councel for an Energy Efficient Economy (ACEEE) smaller cars are safer than SUV's when the risk to other drivers is taken into account. http://www.enn.com/direct/display-release.asp?id=6512.

I wonder if people actually like SUVs or if the marketing because their so profitible is managing to convince people to buy SUV's?

you would LOVE the book i am reading - even though it is a decade old it's all about the devastating effects of the consumerist culture.

Pray tell, what's the title?

I'm always up for more critiques.

Though my academic training suggests that at some point I should read the opposing arguments.

How Much Is Enough?: The Consumer Society and the Future of the Earth

all the arguments for material goods not equaling happiness garner a big "duh" in my book, but the statistics & other arguments are fascinating.

Ah yes... I've got a copy. Another book I found interesting was The Overspent American by Juliet B. Schor.

One of the more entertaining quotes. "In the Telecom sample, I found that each additional hour of television watched in a week led to an additional $208 of annual spending." [pg 82]

Life Rebooted

I saw this show on Frontline

It's an exposé on the SUV industry, and how dangerous they are. Issues were brought to light during the Firestone Tire recall but downplayed to focus on the tires.

I highly recommend publicizing this show so more people will be aware of the downside of SUVs (outside of the obvious gas-guzzling, and eye-blinding lights in the eyes of car drivers).
