I've been on premarin for several years now, and eventually I discovered that stood for PREgnant MARe urINE. More recently I connected the state of being pregnant with producing large numbers of horses. And then asked question, "what happens to the all the foals being produced?" (Yes I was not being particularly bright).

Then I looked into the conditions of the premarin farms, and as expected it's pretty much your typical miserable factory farm conditions. According to a few animal advocacy groups the horses are stuck in stalls without opportunity for exercise or even REM sleep. The foals are typically sold to become food.

So I just got the chance to ask my doctor to switch me to an alternative. (Which appears to be made from yams and soy.)

Premarin is not very popular in the UK (at least in the circles I used to move in) for just this reason. On the other hand, it does have a reputation as possibly the most effective brand of estrogen for mtf purposes. I dont think I missed out though :)

Out of curiosity, what alternative seems best liked?

I switched to estradiol, though some random website claimed that it may be somewhat carcinogenic.

Also I discovered there's a new drug Cenestin that largely duplicates the estrogens from premarin yet are still derived from plant sources.

Well it's been a couple of years since I was in touch with the 'scene' but the preference for most people was a brand called Ovran (which I took for a couple of years), or alternatively, ethynylestradiol (which I take now, for reasons which no longer apply, but inertia means I havent changed).
