According to This article. Several states are trying to offer cash incentives to poor women to get them to marry. Because "marriage is the foundation of a successful society."

Eewww...

People should have the freedom to choose how they relate with each other. Trying to force poor women to marry because the conservitives think that will take them off of welfare is absurd and sick.

I ended up with a sub-atomic family... all the members shooting off in their own directions.

That's nothing -- some years back, the (mildly) fundamentalist mayor of Istanbul offered financial incentives to men to marry prostitutes!

This whole war on welfare crap it disgusting. Even though I am anti-gov't, I still believe that a Basic Income would help these ppl out much more than marriage. Sometimes I actually see certain aspects of our society giving way to some sort of neo-patriarchal/semi-conservative transformation, but with a twist. And there is this new celebrated perception of the American male today... he is atheist or anti-religion and is critical of past "nonsense" but holds onto newer homophobic attitudes and is still "pro-family." If you watch TV you may notice this... It's like it's okay to reject religion but "being American" is still essential and "the family" is so important. There are so many contradictions in this picture but I see it more and more, since I know a lot of working class people who have this attitude. I guess it's convincing too some ppl that things are getting better b/c religion is gone, but I think we have all been consumed by a much more powerful religion, which is the work/consumption/media culture lifestyle that the conservatives complain about b/c they want to return to the old Godly ways... I reject them both. Fuck work, Fuck God, Fuck capitalism.

Hmm... rejection of a previous religion to be replaced with an idealized representation of ones country...

I was recently trying to ask some people to define fascism, and one feature seemed to be a fanaticism about either the glorious leader or the state (we weren't quite sure.)

But what you're describing does sound like it could be a bit fascist.

I wasn't necessarily assuming that, but now that you mention it that does sound a lot like fascism. And then figure I do believe that we are heading to a fascist-esque era...
