So southern california is on fire right now..

If you have google earth there's some really neat resources to visualize the fires.

I rather enjoyed being able to hit a couple of links and have a visualization of the current fire locations overlayed with the satellite views of all the smoke.

One uber cool thing is the US Fire Service now provides hourly snapshots of their MODIS satellite fire detection system in a form compatible with google earth (KMZ).

I was just looking at this data to get a better understanding of the affected areas. Ain't google earth wonderful. Looks like the yellow haze outside is coming from the Big Bear fires.

It also shows how Pasadena appears to be one of the less effected areas. It must really suck to be in San Diego right now.

Download Google Earth 4.2 (beta) for PC, Mac or Linux.

You should have one of those somewhere?

Well... hmm.... I can't seem to find where it was that it told me I needed XP or Vista. You'd think that Google would make it easy to search. :)
