Role playing games

I kind of want to play a table top RPG, but I hate driving places, and everyone nearby is getting obscenely busy.

This has left me wondering how table top gaming would translate to being run in second life over ventrilo.

I ran one a couple years ago via IRC chat room, with of course everyone on the honor system for their die rolls. I would even make full gridded battle maps and put them online so all players could get an accurate view of the area, and I updated the web page it was on every time someone moved so everyone could get real-time updates.

It actually was working out fairly well and getting the kinks worked out when one of the players crapped out on me, and once one does it the rest soon follow. But it was good while it lasted and was certainly doable.

You can actually install some simple scipts if you run an eggdrop bot or something like that for die rolls. I had one where you could basically just type in !D20 for a 20 sided die roll, and you could add modifiers like !2D10 for percentile rolls(or something like that, it's been so long).

Vent or TS would be nice along with IRC because a lot of the fun in RPGing is roleplaying by voice and joking around about roleplaying, heh. 2nd life seems like it could get very complex because then you're actually building your "realm" and that seems overly complicated, at least for me, GMing is hard enough as it is. ;)

Heh, well if you can use FTP and edit simple text files you can do it too. ;) I don't think I've been in an IRC room in years though, heheh.

Yeah, for something like that, you can probably just search for die rolling and the name of your IRC client and something'll turn up.

If you put something together, let me know. I miss RPGs.

One of our games, which has been on hiatus for quite some time but which seems to be returning fairly soon, is run using Klooge Werks. Klooge is pretty good actually. One of our players lives in Santa Cruz and plays by logging in from there, and calling in to the house line and being put on speaker phone. It's not perfect, but it is workable and he seems to still enjoy the games.
