Linux or Bust!

Well thanks to the support[1] of my coworkers, I'm ready to kill win2k on my laptop and return to the joy that is debian linux.

Okay so I'll loose the ability to suspend or hibernate because the ACPI people are still really, really far from getting anything to actually work.

But the horrors of windows, even when ameliorated by cygwin is just to much to bear.

So the plan is to try and optimize the boot process to get linux to boot as fast as possible... If I'm lucky maybe I can get the load time down to something similar to coming out of suspend under win2k

kill it!

actually I'm rather happy with Win98SE -- for all the audio stuff I do, there aren't really any other good choices, aside from getting a Mac (which I plan to do, as well)

I heard rumors that BeOS had good multimedia support, but I suppose that if you're using commercial music software you're stuck with a commercially supported OS.

Although, I thought I heard that linux on Apple hardware has a MacOS emulator that works pretty good.

I'm using *pro* software, and that's the real problem.

I suspected as much. I'd visited your mp3.com site from that deduced that you were using high-end software...

Assuming they've got mac versions, there's maconlinux.org which claims that it can run all MacOS apps. That might give you the best of both worlds...

heh, but audio stuff is so screwy that I wouldn't want to use an emulator.. that's scary :)

Ah, no sense of adventure, no sense of masochism.

Just it's because a functional computer's required for your work, is no reason not to heap loads of trouble upon oneself.

More seriously, I don't think it's an emulator, I think it's some type of alternate interface for MacOS. I'd be suspicious of it's ability to talk to hardware properly. However if it can there's a really slim chance that'd work better than the standard MacOS. (MacOS's multitasking isn't preemptive, while linux's is.) But that's a long-shot.
