WoW and exercise

Once upon a time I thought it might be interesting to hook a DDR pad to WoW to control my characters movement. The theory is that standing and moving around a bit is (at least marginally) better exercise than sitting.

Today I came up with a neat idea... if you paired the DDR pad with an alpha grip controller you might be able to control your characters movement and chat simultaneously. (An alpha grip is like a playstation keypad with enough buttons to act like a regular keyboard).

Heh... there's not a lot of profit margin to be had in reselling other peoples stuff. Though a good how-to, might be worth some status points.

immersive VR

i think just doing audio chat seems simpler, no?

but here's the thing that strikes me - i saw a VR helmet at the Vision Science Society conference that totally blew me away, it was very immersive. the problem is that you don't necessarily have as much space available for walking as you want to navigate in. is there a way to make a multidirectional treadmil, or some other way to re-center you if you were to walk instead of DDRing? it's not nearly as economical, of course, but it would be daaaaaaamn cool.

You mean like the human hamster ball? The problem is its looks like it'd take up a lot of space. The DDR pad, though not nearly as immersive can be taken apart and put in a small box.

(I first saw on troyworks journal).

Though with WoW I'm always running out of potential buttons to control things... so at the very least the DDR pad would add 8-9 more buttons that can easily be hit.

no wai! Which model did you get?

I'd like to know how it works out...

And if you want to use it with WoW if it shows up as keyboard, brandon found a program called joy2key that'll convert a joystick to keyboard buttons.

I would get so much cred if I stole your idea and brandon's program and played wow with my ddr pad. Come over and set it up with me!

When are you and Blinky visiting anyway? We have a big spare bedroom.

Heh I'd like to know if my crazy idea works, and it'll be a bit before I get around to buying all the parts.

As for visiting, Blinkie certainly isn't going to be going anywhere for a while. Her term started up again and she's struggling to stay afloat.

As for me... travel seems so hard.
