I was reading The dollar crisis: Causes, Consequences, Cures which reminded me that I really should do something more useful with my spare cash then let it sit in my credit union account.

Any recommendations for online discount brokerages? It'd be nice if they had a checking/ATM capabilities so I could dump my bank.

Not for online brokerages, but a reminder that there are always activists and causes looking for financial assistance. Obviously, you should invest, but when you have stuff that's truly left over.... ;)

Yeah I know. Though I since I've bought into the culture of fear it can be difficult to let go and share.

I'm a big fan of Vanguard, who tend to have very low expense ratios. I pair them with an online bank, and can transfer funds electronically between them (for free), and get cash at on-campus ATMs (for free) if I ever need to. Their web site uses a little too much Java and Javascript for my taste, but it works right with Mozilla these days.

Sorry about the late reply---just got back from Istanbul! Anyway, a second for Vanguard, which D convinced me to join.

Also, here's a site for socially-responsible funds, one of which is on Vanguard (the Calvert Social Index Fund).
