I've seen those videos a few times. On public tv up here they had a vegan show and showed the video clips. It is icky, but needs to be seen.

After watching it I'm wondering if I should go vegan. Though it is theoretically possibly to produce small quantities of eggs and dairy in a humane manner, meeting the the current demand seems to require this level of cruelty.

I have yet to add eggs back into my diet because even at my lovely co-op vegetarian market (Rainbow) they have a list of all the eggs they sell in a matrix of all possible things done to the chickens. Even the most humane and safest of these eggs still came from chickens that were de-beaked.

As for cheese and dairy, I think there are places where you can buy and be somewha assured that the cows aren't pumped full of hormones and are treated somewhat decently. I think Clover and Stornetta are two companies known for humane treatment of cows and all organic. Also, I tend to try and buy imported cheeses and sheeps or goats milk cheeses because for some reason, in my head, I think they are treated better

Do you know of any markets in LA which have healthy food like you describe? The best I can do is buy my eggs at trader joe's because it says "free range" on the box.

Well, once upon a time you guys had Wild Oats, but I think they went out of business. I know the one in West Hollywood did, but there was also one in Santa Monice. There is another place is Canoga Park called "Follow Your Heart." It's a vegetarian market and restaurant. Great food, good market, tons of resources (newspapers, flyers, etc.). Also, check vegdining.com. Sometimes they post markets on there. Good luck.

P.S. I just tried egg replacer for the first time in baking and it came out really good. I couldn't tell the difference
