blogging for work

Hm...

Once again I never bothered to jump in with my status report for the week during our weekly project meeting.

It occured to me that perhaps I should be keeping a work blog and if any of my coworkers (or bosses) want to know what I'm doing they could go read that.

Yeah, using the MoinMoin wiki, some extra code, it might work...

If you want something a notch up from a blog, you might consider a ticket-tracking system. I'm a big fan of 'em. I hear RT is pretty good, and not too much overhead to set up... (We use a commercial one plus a locally-written web interface over here in ITS.)

I've never used a decent ticket tracking system... I've tried to set up gnats and roundup and neither worked well. Though they always felt rather linear to me. A ticket would be issued and then you'd write up notes regarding that ticket.

I tend to be more non-linear (aka get distracted) and want some way of making notes about some interesting new technique and provide some way of linking it to projects I think it might be related to. (The reason I was thinking of the wiki)

I don't know if that conception of the difference between how I want to work and how I think ticket trackers work is right (and there's always the possibility I should be working differently.

Yeah, a ticket-tracking system is less about jotting down cool things you've found; it's more useful as a way of keeping track of what you're supposed to be doing (and what you've done), and giving others a way to see the same thing. It may or may not solve any problem you actually have. :^) But if you're just looking to log what you did so someone else can see it, it's a decent way to do that.
